Another World Is Possible
Monday January 15, 2007
I have never forgotten the life Dr. Martin Luther King led, nor the day he was killed. I was not yet 20 years old and had just begun my meager attempts at activism for civil rights. I was in college, had friends who went to Viet Nam, and others who knew before I did that all war was failure, and that Viet Nam was the beginning of our end. I also had been studying the life of Mahatma Gandhi, and as I watched Dr. King and listened to his proclamations that we all would soon be "free at last," I realized that he was living the truth and love, the fight for justice, the same as Gandhi had...no violence, no hatred, no fear to stand up for human rights.
The day Dr. King died, I felt the presence of Gandhi, as the violence of his death was much the same as that of Dr. King's: it belied their lives, dishonored their spirit, which was as if they were one. And I knew, beyond any doubt, that our world, my world, would never, ever, be the same. It couldn't be; I couldn't be.
I felt extreme loss and grief when Dr. King died, and because I was so young, I wasn't completely sure why. But I also felt some sort of power, for I had been shown the way to truth and love by Dr. King's example of fearless love. I began to listen again to his words and to the words of Gandhi. I read all I could about both men. And as I grew into a journalist and a college professor, I used them in my teachings about how to live in peace and honor in this world where war and greed, often outright hatred, seemed to lead the way.
At many points in my life since Dr. King's death, I have turned my despair at these horrors of life into a kind of "living in grace," in honor of Dr. King. I try to look for beauty in whatever I see, yet I do not back away from fighting for justice if the ugly hatred of the world stands in my way. And at the moment that the beauty eludes me, and I can barely take the sadness in the world, I remember these words of Gandhi: "When I despair, I remember that all through history, the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible. But in the end, they always fall. Think of it...always!" And I think of Dr. King's truth...and I think...always.
Dr. King recognized and lived Gandhi's words and his ideology. His life, in words and actions, taught me this: We are the hope for peace in the world, only if we are strong enough to use our voices fearlessly to proclaim justice, with thoughtful grace and love for all.
Respectfully, Professor Nan Fandel

MAXIMUM EFFORT TO SECURE FULL CONSIDERATION OF IMPEACHMENT IS THE DUTY OF EVERYONE.
Impeachment is the means by which We The People of the United States and our elected representatives in Congress can prevent further crimes by the President and the human catastrophe they threaten and force accountability for crimes committed.
Congressional proceedings for impeachment can bring about open, fearless consideration of the most dangerous acts and threats ever committed by an American President. If courageously pursued, they can save our Constitution, the United Nations, the rule of law, the lives of countless people and leave open the possibility of peace on earth. Each of us must take a stand on impeachment now, or bear the burden of having failed to speak in this hour of maximum peril.
Ramsey Clark January 15, 2003
PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH AND OTHER NAMED OFFICIALS OF THE UNITED STATES HAVE COMMITTED IMPEACHABLE OFFENSES OF UNPRECEDENTED DANGER TO THE CONSTITUTION AND PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES.
We must draft Articles of Impeachment of President George W. Bush, Vice President Richard Cheney, Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, and Attorney General Alberto Gonzolaz of the United States, charging them with the most serious crimes known to law and history. Nothing in the experience of the impeachment power under the US Constitution compares. The conduct of George W. Bush as President of the US (and those listed above, among others) has threatened the US Constitution, the United Nations, the rule of law, and the lives of unknown thousands, or millions, of people by action and example.
The alleged impeachable acts of US President George W. Bush include:
1. Ordering and directing "first strike" war of aggression against Afghanistan causing thousands of deaths;
2. Removing the government of Afghanistan by force and installing a government of his choice;
3. Authorizing daily intrusions into Iraqi airspace and aerial attacks including attacks on alleged defense installations in Iraq which have killed hundreds of people in time of peace;
4. Authorizing, ordering and condoning attacks in Afghanistan and Iraq on civilians, civilian facilities and locations where civilian casualties are unavoidable;
5. Threatening the use of nuclear weapons and ordering preparation for their use;
6. Threatening the independence and sovereignty of Iraq by belligerently proclaiming his personal intention to change its government by force;
7. Authorizing, ordering and condoning assassinations, summary executions, murder, kidnappings, secret and other illegal detentions of individuals, torture and physical and psychological coercion of prisoners;
8. Authorizing, ordering and condoning violations of rights of individuals under the First, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Eight Amendments to the Constitution and of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and other international protections of human rights;
9. Authorizing, directing and condoning bribery and coercion of individuals and governments to obtain his war ends;
10. Making, ordering and condoning false statements and propaganda and concealing information vital to public discussion and informed judgment to create a climate of fear and hatred and destroy opposition to his war goals.
President Bush is accused of Crimes Against Peace, War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity. No crimes are greater threats to the Constitution of the United States, the United Nation Charter, the rule of law or the future of humanity.
(There are more listed in an earlier posting on this site; the list is staggering.)

I REFUSE to surrender my conscientious freedom as a US and World citizen to these criminals or those who follow their leadership.
Work hard to impeach, arrest, and convict George W. Bush and Richard Cheney NOW, under Article II, Section 4 of the US Constitution!
It is our duty; we owe it to our children and the honor of our country.

The immediate impeachment of George W. Bush and Richard Cheney should be the first order of business for the new Democratic Congress.
However, impeachment alone will not provide appropriate punishment for the crimes that Bush, Cheney, Condoleeza Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, Dennis Hastert, and Karl Rove have committed in the name of the Executive Branch of the United States. These people are pseudo-stewards of our U.S. Constitution. They MUST be arrested, as any U.S. citizen would be, for committing high crimes against the U.S., the international community, and the planet.
Their crimes only begin with the lie of the Iraq war. And so, we must begin by asking the newly elected U.S. Congress to rescind the Authorization to Use Military Force (AUMF) sanctioned by the Republican-led U.S. Congress in 2001.
Why?
Because in their effort to obtain this congressional sanction, the Bush administration lied about intelligence information in order to justify a pre-emptive strike against Iraq, without further oversight by Congress.
The fallout since has been devastating. It has been devastating for all directly involved in the Iraq war, for those who believed Bush's lies, and for all who protested the masquerade from the very beginning. The illegal wiretapping of innocent U.S. citizens, the torture and detention of prisoners that overtly break rules set forth via the Geneva Convention, and the defiance of federal courts and acts of Congress simply begin the long list of crimes that Bush and his administration have committed since the war against Iraq.
Petition:
I call for the U.S. Congress and American citizens to immediately begin to work to:
1.) Impeach George W. Bush and Richard Cheney. 2.) Rescind the 2001 AUMF. 3.) Force the resignation of George W. Bush and Richard Cheney. 4.) Call for the indictments and arrests, under the laws of the U.S. Constitution, of George W. Bush, Richard Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Condoleeza Rice, Dennis Hastert, and Karl Rove.
A majority of U.S. voters have already taken the first step by voting in a new Democratic Congress, placing our trust in them to honestly and forthrightly represent our values, protect our rights, and honor our hard work and diligent attention to the laws of our country. As one of that majority, I ask them to assist us in taking back the integrity of our country by cleaning out the current corrupt Executive Branch of our government. In doing so, we will preserve the right to freedom and honor that is due each and every citizen of this great country, and of the world.
I respectfully request this in the name of common decency, the decency that demands that as citizens of the world, we do no harm, the decency that requires those of us who know of any falsity, any injustice, or any harm being perpetrated against humanity in the name of the United States to stand up and say, "No more! You will be punished."

ALWAYS! by Nan
When I despair, I remember that all through history,
the way of truth and love has always won.
There have been tyrants and murderers,
and for a time, they can seem invincible.
But in the end, they always fall.
Think of it...always.
